Definition

Leadership is a social charisma of influencing and inspiring others to achieve a common goal. With this charisma a business leader can create very highly performing team.

A trait is unusual feature found in a person which makes him/her successful in leadership

Leadership Styles

  1. Autocratic Leadership(No People Involvement)
  2. Dictatorship Leadership (Less People Involvement)
  3. Democratic (More People Involvement)
  4. Laissez-faire (hands-off¨ style, leave people do for themselves)

Autocratic Leadership

A style of leadership that involve giving orders to doers or followers. The authoritarian leadership style or autocratic leader keeps strict, close control over followers by keeping close regulation of policies and procedures given to followers.  The decide what to be done, when, by who and where. This style is commonly known by “No People Involvement”

Example a pastor giving order followers orders to attend a prayer session. A tribal leader giving order to his followers to attend a traditional ritual session.

Characteristics

  1. Not selected by people
  2. Not involving people
  3. No questioning the performance of leaders
  4. Unlimited powers to leaders
  5. Full Obedience
  6. No revolts and wars
  7. Leaders lead without fear
  8. High solidarity

Advantages

 

 

Disadvantages

  1. No or low development
  2. High corruption rates
  3. High rate of human rights injustice
  • The style is commonly used in tribal systems, religious settings and military places etc

Dictatorship leadership

A style of leadership that involves people in minor decisions but gives orders and commands in vital decisions. This style of leadership is commonly known as “Less People Involvement”

There are two sub types of dictatorship leadership,

1.      Ethical Dictatorship leadership

2.      Malicious Dictatorship leadership

Ethical dictatorship is a style of a dictatorship leadership done to protect the interest of many who are ignorant, not educated, poor etc. Eg JK Nyerere leadership style.

Malicious dictatorship leadership style is a style of leadership done to protect the interests of leaders, their families, friends, big bosses, etc

Characteristics

  1. Very important leaders are not selected by people
  2. Important issues are decided by leaders
  3. No questioning the performance of leaders on very important issues
  4. Kingship powers from leaders to leaders
  5. No revolts and wars
  6. Leaders lead without fear
  7. Solidarity is high
  8. The interest of many is easily protected

Advantages (if used appropriately)

General Disadvantage (malicious and ethical)

¨       People are not involved therefore slow development

¨       There is no, motivation to do things

¨       In many times ethical type develops to malicious styles due to too much powers invested to a leader.

¨       Lead to war if prolonged to long period after many people get educated and understand their basic rights

  • The style is commonly used in groups or societies with low literacy and commitment for work, communities at war, tribal wars, low civilization etc

Democratic

The style of leadership where leaders involve the group in making fundamental decisions that affect their lives and implementing them. It also known by “More People Involvement”

Characteristics

  1. Very important leaders are selected by people
  2. Important issues are decided by people
  3. People always question  performance of leaders on very important issues
  4. Transparency is high
  5. Kingship powers from leaders to leaders
  6. Freedom of voice and choice
  7. There is a high rate of development
  8. Innovation are high due to high competition

Advantages (if used appropriately)

General Disadvantage (if not used appropriately)

¨       The poor and ignorant interests are not protected, resources misused, democratic election are turned into buy and selling of votes

¨       Wars and chaos due to high rate of corruption

¨       International robbery of national resources in the name of investment

  • The style best fit in groups or societies with high literacy and commitment for work, highly civilized people  etc

Laissez-faire

Laissez-faire means “leave do” in French. It describes a system by which leadership takes a hands-off approach. Rather than attempting to micromanage, laissez-faire leaders allow their subordinates to work under their own direction to achieve a more general set of goals. Laissez-faire leaders may think that interfering less with the work environment enables employees to focus more intently. It is commonly known as “Hands-Off Leadership”

Characteristics

  1. Leaders are selected by people and overthrown frequently
  2. Everybody says and do anything he/she feel
  3. Transparency is so high to the extent of causing chaos
  4. Highest level of freedom of voice and choices

Advantages (if used appropriately)

 

 

Disadvantages

a. Decline in moral conduct of leadership and people
b. Extreme Theft and robbery
c. State goes bankrupt
d. Frequent Public Demonstration
e. Killing of the innocent
f. Depriving human rights to the poor
g. National Infrastructure and systems collapses
h. In many times the army overthrow the government

  • It is either not fit to most societies or fit to highly educated, civilized and understanding people
